How to use the unit converter

What it covers

Length, weight and volume convert by taking your value to a base unit (meters, kilograms or liters) and then to the unit you want. Temperature uses formulas because the scales have different zero points: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32, and K = °C + 273.15.

Worked examples

Height: 5 ft 10 in is 70 inches, and 70 × 2.54 = 177.8 cm.

Weight: 150 lb × 0.453592 ≈ 68.04 kg.

Temperature: 350°F is (350 − 32) × 5/9 ≈ 176.67°C. Body temperature of 98.6°F is 37°C, and 20°C is 68°F.

Watch out for these

Ton: here it means a metric ton (1,000 kg), not the US short ton of 2,000 lb, which is about 907 kg.
Gallons, pints and quarts are US liquid measures. A UK (imperial) gallon is about 4.546 liters, roughly 20% larger.
Ounces: the weight ounce is not the same as the fluid ounce, and one doesn't convert to the other without knowing the ingredient. For cooking, use the cooking converter, which handles it by ingredient.
