Enter the original price, choose a discount with the preset buttons (10%, 20%, 25%, 30%, 50%) or type any custom percentage, and optionally add your local sales tax rate. You'll see how much you save, the sale price before tax, and the final total.
How discounts are calculated
Sale price = original price × (1 − discount% ÷ 100). Savings = original price − sale price. If you add a tax rate, it is applied to the discounted price to get the final total: final total = sale price × (1 + tax% ÷ 100).
Worked examples
$85 item, 30% off, 7% tax: you save $25.50, the sale price is $59.50, and the final total is $63.67.
$120 item, 25% off, 8.25% tax: you save $30.00, the sale price is $90.00, and the final total is $97.43.
Useful things to know
Stacked discounts don't add. 20% off followed by another 10% off is not 30% off. It is 100 × 0.80 × 0.90 = 72, a 28% total discount. Run the calculator twice, using the sale price from the first pass as the new original price.
Working backward: to find an original price from a sale price, divide by (1 − discount). A $68 price after 15% off means the original was 68 ÷ 0.85 = $80.
Dollars off as a percentage: $10 off a $40 item is 10 ÷ 40 = 25% off. The percentage calculator does this in its "X is what % of Y" mode.
Buy one, get one: BOGO free on two equal-priced items is 50% off the pair. Buy one, get one 50% off is 25% off the pair.
Frequently asked questions
Is sales tax calculated before or after the discount?
This calculator applies tax after the discount, which is how most store markdowns work. Rules for coupons and manufacturer rebates can differ by store and location, so check your receipt if the exact total matters.
Does it round?
Amounts are displayed to the cent. Underlying values keep full precision, so a total can differ from your receipt by a cent if the store rounds each step.
Can I use it for markups or price increases?
Not directly. For a percent increase, use the "% Increase/Decrease" mode in the percentage calculator. To work out a tip on a bill, try the tip calculator.
